NC rises to No. 2 in solar installations

North Carolina jumped into second place behind California in terms of solar power capacity added in 2013, according to the annual NPD Solarbuzz market report.

It was primarily strong utility-scale activity that propelled North Carolina from No. 5 in 2012 to No. 2 in 2013, overtaking both Arizona and New Jersey. Texas also made a strong jump in the ranking, rising from No. 9 to No. 5.

STRATA SOLAR

Strata Solar has 11 projects under construction in North Carolina, contributing to strong industry growth. The state had the second-largest increase in solar capacity in 2013 behind California.

The U.S. added a record 4.2 gigawatts of new solar installations in 2013, and the market grew by 15 percent over 2012. It is now the leading solar market outside the Asia-Pacific region, the report said. Large-scale projects accounted for 80 percent of the new solar capacity, but small-scale solar at homes and on small commercial rooftops also increased by 10 percent over 2012.
