United Solar Initiative Donates to Hope House of Durham

Strata Solar and United Solar Initiative Install Solar for Refugee House

Imagine fleeing a refugee camp in Northern Africa to find yourself being welcomed into a solar-powered home in Durham, NC, complete with an North African meal waiting for you. This is real life, and for many families making their way through the Hope House of Durham, they are getting a first-hand experience in charity and hospitality. Recently, volunteers from Strata Solar helped the United Solar Initiative team install a groundmount solar plant adjacent to the home, allowing it to run more efficiently and save on energy costs.

The house, which was once the church office for Hope Valley Baptist Church, was recently renovated into a home for families in transition and awaiting permanent housing. Residents may stay for a few nights or a few weeks until they can get settled in a permanent arrangement with the help of local organizations like World Relief Durham

Pastor Bill Bigger explained the project in an article, shedding some light (no pun) on what these people are facing and how local groups, like his congregation, can come together for the greater good.

“Can you imagine being forced to leave home because of violence and attacks and having to start in a new country with little money and little to no understanding of the culture?” Bigger asked. “Can you imagine what a gift it would be for people to be there to welcome you, provide some food and hospitality, teach you some basic skills you will need, and promise to walk with you through your adjustment to a new place?”

Strata Solar is proud of the work being done locally to advance, not only solar, but the community goodwill it can help create.
