Chapel Hill’s Strata Solar plans third 75-megawatt solar farm in N.C. | NewsObserver.com

Chapel Hill’s Strata Solar is planning the state’s third 75-megawatt solar farm, this one in Wilson County.

The Wiggins Mill Farm solar project, which to date is one of the three biggest proposed in North Carolina, will generate electricity to power more than 11,000 residential homes on bright, cloudless days when the project is generating maximum output.

It is expected to start generating electricity in March 2015 and will sell the power output to Duke Energy Progress, a subsidiary of Duke Energy.

The N.C. Utilities Commission approved the project last week. It is to be built along U.S. Highway 301 and will consist of 357,586 photovoltaic modules mounted on racks and anchored to the ground.

Strata Solar, founded in 2008, expects to have more than 200 megawatts of solar power in operation by the end of this year.

One of those projects is a 75-megawatt solar farm in Duplin County that’s expected to start generating electricity next year. Another is being developed in Rutherford County.
